Archival Regulations

 
  1. Permission to use materials in the Archival Center must be obtained from the Chancellor or his duly deputized delegate, the Archivist. All persons admitted to the Archival Center will be accompanied either by the Chancellor, the Archivist or his delegate. At no time will a person remain alone in the Archival Center.  
  2. Inasmuch as the Archival Center is not primarily intended to serve the general public, only those having a legitimate interest in their content will be afforded admission.  
  3. Permission to use material is not to be construed as authorization to quote verbatim from materials contained therein.  
  4. Every researcher is asked to fill out a registration form noting thereon the purpose of his/her work and the materials he/she wishes to consult.  
  5. No book, document or manuscript may be removed from the Archival Center.  
 
6. Photocopying of materials contained in the Archival Center is permitted only with the express permission of the owner of the copyrighted material.		  
  7. All copying of documents by researchers is done with pencil, typewriter or laptop computer. Additionally, the use of "personal copiers" is not permitted, nor may "scanners" be used with any laptop computer.  
  8. Should certified copies of any document contained in the Archival Center be required, the Archivist or his delegate will arrange to have the pertinent document photographed. The cost of this process is to be borne by the interested party. It is understood that certified documents, when provided and used, must acknowledge the Archival Center, Archdiocese of Los Angeles, (AALA) as their source.  
  9. No marking of any kind shall be placed on any book or document contained in the Archival Center.  
  10. No smoking, food or drink is allowed in the Archival Center.  
  11. Portions of the Archival Center, pursuant to the wishes of the copyright holders of the documents, as well as the wishes of the Archbishop, are currently closed to researchers. These portions include: the papers of James Francis Cardinal McIntyre; Timothy Cardinal Manning; Archbishop Roger Mahony; Bishops Thaddeus Shubsda, John Ward, Manuel Moreno, Patrick Ziemann, Juan Arzube, Armando Ochoa, Carl Fisher, Thomas Curry, Joseph Sartoris, Gabino Zavala, Stephen Blaire, Sylvester Ryan, Edward Clark and Gerald Wilkerson; correspondence between the Chancery Office and any entities of the Archdiocese from 1987 to the present; Sacramental records less than seventy-two years old; the personnel records of any priest of the Archdiocese deceased less than fifty years.  
  12. The use of the Archival Center is a privilege accorded to researcher and can be revoked at the will of the Archbishop of Los Angeles, or his delegate, the Archivist. Further, the penalty for unlawfully removing or maliciously damaging any document of the Archival Center is suspension, where that penalty has foundation. Failure to use reasonable care in the handling of the documents at the Archival Center will be considered as canonically malicious. Additionally, appropriate recourse for damages, subject to the laws of the State of California, will be pursued by the Archival Center against individuals damaging any document, book or related object
