  The Archival Center is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon, and 1:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.. Researchers and scholars wishing to visit the Archival Center are asked to do so by appointment.  
  Permission to use materials housed in the Archival Center must be secured from the Archivist, in writing. Scholars and researchers are required to sign a Permission Request form, indicating the nature of their work and the specific documents requested for viewing. All copying of materials is to be done on the premises with pencil or typewriter. No smoking is allowed in the Archival Center.  
  DOCUMENTS:
In addition to the numerous finding devices prepared and available on in-house computers, a series of eleven calendars of documents and related historical materials housed in the Archival Center has been published and circulated to research centers in the United States and abroad in which 22,674 of the documents (1840-1970) are enumerated as to author, recipient, date, place of origin and digest. The Calendars are available in the nation's major research facilities. Please consult them before contacting us. Permission to quote from documents is given with the understanding that the holding agency will be properly recited.
 
  SERVICES PROVIDED:
Among the many services provided by the Archival Center:
 
 

1. Serves as the official record repository for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles;

 
 

2. Operates two distinct historical museums for the enlightenment and edification of tourists and other visitors;

 
 

3. Responds to numerous written and verbal requests for historical information pertaining to the history of the Catholic Church in California;

 
 

4. Serves as the official archives for the California Catholic Conference; Accommodates upwards of 150 historical researchers each year;

 
 

5. Functions as a resource center for questions dealing with the foundation and development of the Roman Catholic Church in Western America.

 
 

6. Serves as the coordinator of the Archconfraternity of Blessed Junipero Serra;

 
 

7. Houses and makes available to researchers the Estelle Doheny collection of Western Americana.

 
  CONCLUSION:
The historical and archival ministry in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles is in total conformity with the Code of Canon Law and the directives and suggestions contained in the Circular Letter of February 2, 1997 from the Pontifical Commission for the Cultural Heritage of the Church.
